Hello! We are Kat and Sue, and we're here to bring Malaysia to you - through food!
We're best friends who grew up together in Malaysia and spent most of our friendship eating and thinking about eating! We moved to the UK back in 2009 but couldn't find anywhere to truly satisfy our Malaysian food cravings (and student budgets!) so we hit the kitchen and learnt how to cook the dishes we missed from home ourselves and now we're here to share that Malaysian love with all of you :)
Here's a little bit about our journey so far:
2018: We created Makan Malaysia. Makan means eat in Malay and that's basically the goal, we want to share all things Malaysian - history, art & culture- through food. We wanted to put Malaysian cuisine on the map as a go-to food in the UK and our first step was to make and sell The Sambal, a spicy Malaysian chilli paste that is prominent throughout Malaysian cooking, because no meal is complete without it! If you have yet to try it, we highly recommend you get some asap!
2019: Makan Malaysia started hosting intimate dinner parties, immersive supper clubs, catered for private events and we also got ourselves a gaebo so we could serve up Malaysian street food at pop ups across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and London. We were well and truly on our journey of spreading the Malaysian word!
2020:The pandemic hit so we had to adapt and completely change up our business model. We wanted to keep feeding our customers and spreading the reach of Malaysian cuisine so Makan Malaysia became a non-customer facing online shop, delivering chilled meals in plastic-free packaging to people’s homes all over the UK.
2021: Our online shop continues to grow and as restrictions begin to lift, we are back out meeting our customers, popping up with our gazebo and cooking hot and fresh Malaysian food for our customers! We hope to get out and travel far and wide with our food, converting more and more people to the joy that is Malaysian dining ;)
